Phonics is a method of teaching the relationship between letters and the sound(s).  Mastering phonics enhances a child's ability to read fluently, comprehend text more effectively, and supports spelling. The more systematic and explicit the phonics instruction is in Tier 1, the better the reading outcomes will be for all students.
