Elevating Nebraska Literacy:  It Takes All of Us!

NSLA held its Summer Institute on July 17th with a full day of learning and collaborating.  Over 190 educators attended the conference either in person or online.  Our lineup of speakers gave us a lot to consider as we begin a new school year.

Lindsay Kemeny discussed her Seven Mighty Moves (based on her book) to improve literacy instruction, Brent Conway talked about our Balanced Literacy Hangover and how his district has used data to incrementally improve reading outcomes. Lori Sappington gave us a mock podcast with both speakers and then discussed hot topic questions that have been asked by her audiences and answered by the experts interviewed on her podcast, Melissa & Lori Loves Literacy. All of these and more can be found in their new book, The Literacy 50.  We also heard from the Nebraska Department of Education which discussed the latest on the Nebraska Literacy Project.

We would like to thank all of you who attended this conference and we are excited to keep the momentum that was built this summer soaring into the 25/26 school year.  If you attended the conference and need a Certificate of Attendance - please email Nancy.

One of the topics that emerged during the conference was on the teaching of literacy "skills/strategies."  Do skills/strategies taught in isolation (author's purpose, main idea, summarization, inferencing, etc.) really increase reading comprehension?  This newsletter is going to explore some of the information that has been published just on that topic.

Reading Comprehension:  Product or Process

In this Pattanpod video, Dr. Hugh Catts gives an overall explanation of reading comprehension and how it is multi-dimensional and cannot be reduced to one single skill.  He also discusses assessments and where we can put our efforts in enhancing comprehension.  If you only have 23 extra minutes in your life to watch this, you won't be disappointed.  Click above to watch.
